Sure Klean Iron Stain Remover — Non-Acidic Copper & Metallic Salt Stain Removal for Natural Stone and Masonry

Sure Klean Iron Stain Remover is a specialized liquid cleaner developed by PROSOCO for removing copper and other metallic salt staining from natural stone and masonry surfaces. Formulated as a non-acidic poultice additive, it is designed for professional use by contractors and restoration specialists working on sensitive or high-value masonry installations. The product is mixed with PROSOCO's Marble Poultice powder to produce a trowelable paste that draws staining out of the substrate upon drying. This is a special order product — production lead times and quantity minimums may apply.

Unlike acid-based stain removers that can etch or damage sensitive substrates, Iron Stain Remover's non-acidic chemistry makes it safe for use on polished marble and other acid-sensitive stone or masonry surfaces where conventional treatments would cause irreversible damage. Its clear, ammonia-based liquid formula is compliant with all national, state, and district VOC regulations.

Key Features & Benefits

Non-Acidic Formula Safe for Acid-Sensitive Surfaces

Iron Stain Remover's non-acidic chemistry means contractors can treat copper and metallic salt staining on polished marble, limestone, and other acid-sensitive stone without risk of etching or surface damage. This expands the range of substrates that can be treated effectively, eliminating the need to choose between cleaning performance and surface preservation.

Poultice Application Method for Deep Stain Extraction

When mixed with PROSOCO's Marble Poultice powder, Iron Stain Remover forms a thick, creamy paste applied by trowel at approximately 1/4-inch thickness. As the poultice dries and contracts, it draws the stain out of the substrate rather than simply treating the surface, making it effective on stains that have penetrated into porous stone or masonry.

Specialized for Copper and Metallic Salt Staining

Copper runoff staining from roof flashings, hardware, and architectural elements is a common challenge on natural stone and masonry facades. Iron Stain Remover is specifically developed for this stain type, giving contractors a targeted solution rather than a general-purpose cleaner that may not perform adequately on metallic salt deposits.

VOC Compliant Nationwide

Iron Stain Remover meets all national, state, and district VOC regulations, so contractors can use it on projects in any jurisdiction without compliance concerns. This is particularly relevant for commercial and public-sector jobs where environmental documentation may be required.

2-Year Shelf Life

With a shelf life of two years in a tightly sealed, unopened container, Iron Stain Remover can be stocked for special-order or periodic restoration projects without concern about product degradation between uses, provided storage conditions are maintained.

Common Applications

Copper Runoff Staining on Stone Facades

Removes green or blue-black copper staining caused by runoff from roof flashings, gutters, downspouts, or architectural copper elements that have oxidized and leached onto natural stone or masonry below.

Metallic Salt Stain Removal on Polished Marble

Safe for use on polished marble surfaces where acid-based treatments cannot be used, allowing removal of metallic salt deposits without damaging the polished finish.

Natural Stone Restoration and Cleaning

Suitable for restoration contractors addressing staining on granite, limestone, travertine, and other natural stone surfaces where metallic contamination has occurred over time.

Masonry Surface Remediation

Applicable to concrete masonry, brick, and other masonry substrates affected by copper or metallic salt staining from adjacent metals or environmental exposure.

Compatible Materials

  • Polished marble
  • Natural stone (acid-sensitive varieties)
  • Granite
  • Limestone
  • Travertine
  • Concrete masonry
  • Brick masonry
  • Other acid-sensitive stone or masonry surfaces

Application Instructions

Preparation

  1. Protect foliage and painted surfaces using polyethylene or other proven protective material.
  2. Divert or protect auto and pedestrian traffic from the work area.
  3. Confirm surface and air temperatures are at least 50°F (10°C). Do not mix or apply below freezing — wet poultice will freeze.
  4. Always test a small area of each surface type and each stain type before beginning overall application. Use the same equipment and procedures planned for general application. Allow the test area to dry 3–7 days before inspection and approval. Test at temperatures similar to those expected during overall work.

Mixing

  1. Pour or shovel the dry PROSOCO Marble Poultice into a suitable mixing container.
  2. While mixing, add sufficient Iron Stain Remover to produce a wet paste of trowelable consistency. Approximately 1 quart of Iron Stain Remover is required per 1 pound of dry Marble Poultice powder.

Application

  1. Apply the prepared poultice mix to the stained surface at a uniform thickness of approximately 1/4 inch using a plasterer's trowel or wide, flexible taping knife.
  2. Cover the poultice with PROSOCO's OverCoat protective paper, glossy side down. Press firmly against the poultice, rub gently to remove air pockets and ensure smooth overall adhesion, and tape/seal off all edges.
  3. Allow the poultice to remain on the surface for 12–24 hours.
  4. Remove OverCoat. Allow the poultice to dry completely, approximately 2–4 hours. A fully developed network of surface cracks indicates the poultice is completely dry. Dry times vary with temperature, wind, and humidity.
  5. After the poultice is completely dry, carefully scrape the poultice from the surface.
  6. Using a stiff-fibered scrubbing brush and fresh water, wash the surface thoroughly.

Storage and Handling

  1. Transport and store in a cool, dry place with adequate ventilation at temperatures of 45–100°F (7–38°C).
  2. Always seal container after dispensing. Do not alter or mix with other chemicals.
  3. Do not double stack pallets. Store containers upright.
  4. Dispose of unused product and container in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
