SafStrip High-Strength Paint & Coatings Remover — Methylene Chloride-Free Gel Stripper for Masonry, Concrete, Wood & Metal
Enviro Klean® SafStrip® is a professional-grade, high-strength paint and coatings remover formulated as a low-odor, thixotropic gel. Designed for contractors and trades professionals, it quickly removes most paints, clear coats, and graffiti from masonry, concrete, wood, and metal surfaces without the use of hazardous methylene chloride or methanol. It is manufactured by PROSOCO, Inc. and is restricted to professional users.
Unlike solvent-heavy strippers, SafStrip's gel consistency allows it to cling to vertical and overhead surfaces, reducing drips and spills during large-scale application. Its formulation requires no surface neutralization after use and rinses off easily with cold or hot water, saving time on post-cleaning steps.

Key Features & Benefits
No Hazardous Methylene Chloride or Methanol
SafStrip is formulated without methylene chloride or methanol, two chemicals commonly found in aggressive paint strippers that carry significant health and regulatory concerns. This makes the product safer to use on occupied or partially enclosed job sites and simplifies compliance with increasingly strict chemical use regulations.
Thixotropic Gel Consistency
The gel formula is spill-resistant and clings to surfaces during dwell time, making it easier to apply on vertical walls, textured masonry, and overhead areas without excessive runoff. This also supports slow drying for fast, large-scale application where broad coverage is needed before rinsing.
Low Odor and Low Toxicity
The low-odor profile reduces the need for extensive ventilation controls compared to more aggressive chemical strippers, which is especially useful when working in semi-enclosed areas or near building occupants. The non-flammable formulation further reduces site hazard management requirements.
No Surface Neutralization Required
After stripping, no neutralizing rinse or treatment step is needed — spent stripper flushes away with cold or hot water. This eliminates an entire step from the workflow, reducing labor time and material costs on stripping projects.
Broad Coating Removal Capability
SafStrip breaks the bond of high-strength paints and coatings including acrylics, alkyds, and clear sealers, and dissolves common hard-to-remove graffiti media such as spray paints, marking pens, and lacquers. This versatility reduces the need to stock multiple specialty strippers for different coating types.
No Protective Covering Needed
The product does not require protective covering during dwell time, streamlining site setup and reducing material staging time. Combined with its slow-drying formula, this allows crews to apply SafStrip over large areas efficiently before beginning the rinse phase.
Common Applications
Graffiti Removal from Masonry and Concrete
SafStrip dissolves spray paints, marking pens, and lacquers from masonry and concrete surfaces, making it well-suited for graffiti abatement work on building facades, retaining walls, and hardscape.
Paint Stripping from Concrete Floors and Walls
Removes high-strength paints and clear coats from concrete substrates, including acrylics and alkyds, in preparation for recoating, sealing, or surface restoration.
Sealer and Wax Removal
Effective at removing clear sealers and wax buildup from masonry and concrete surfaces where a clean, bare substrate is required before applying new coatings or treatments.
Paint Stripping from Metal Surfaces
Removes coatings from metal substrates where compatible. Note: some metal finishes may be sensitive to SafStrip — protect those areas with solvent-resistant polyethylene secured by duct tape before application.
Paint Removal from Wood
Suitable for removing paints and coatings from wood surfaces. Not intended for finely finished wood surfaces such as furniture.
Compatible Materials
- Masonry
- Concrete
- Wood (not finely finished surfaces such as furniture)
- Metal (check for sensitivity; protect polished or sensitive metal finishes)
Limitations
- Not for use on finely finished wood surfaces such as furniture
- Not for removal of cementitious coatings
- Not for use on polished surfaces (PROSOCO's SafStrip 8 is recommended for polished or other sensitive surfaces)
- Sure Klean® Strippable Masking is not appropriate for use with stripping products

Application Instructions
Surface Preparation
- Protect people, plants, vehicles, glass, solvent-sensitive materials, roofing material, and all surfaces not set for stripping from product, splash, rinse, residue, fumes, and wind drift.
- Scrape or pressure rinse the surface to remove all peeling and/or loose coatings.
- Let the surface dry thoroughly before applying stripper.
- Protect any sensitive metal finishes with solvent-resistant polyethylene secured by duct tape.
- Confirm surface and air temperatures are above 40°F (4°C) and below 85°F (29°C).
Testing
- Always test a small area of each surface to confirm suitability, coverage rate, and desired results before beginning overall application.
- Test with the same equipment, surface preparation, and application procedures planned for general application.
- Let the test area dry thoroughly before inspection.
- Test for dwell time, application thickness, and number of applications needed to remove all traces of coating.
Application
- Apply as packaged — do not dilute or alter the product.
- Apply using a solvent-resistant brush or roller.
- Apply a thicker layer for heavier coatings.
- Allow sufficient dwell time for the product to break the bond of the coating. Note: dwell times effective in one season may not be effective in another due to temperature variation.
Rinsing
- Rinse with enough water and pressure to flush spent cleaner and dissolved coating from the surface and surface pores without damage.
- For porous surfaces, use masonry-washing equipment generating 400–1,000 psi with a water flow rate of 6–8 gallons per minute and a 15–45° fan spray tip.
- Heated water (150–180°F; 65–82°C) may improve cleaning efficiency.
- Use adjustable equipment to reduce water flow rates and rinsing pressure as needed for sensitive surfaces.
- Do not exceed 1,000 psi or use fan spray tips smaller than 15° on sensitive surfaces, as permanent damage may result.
- Do not use water flow rates less than 6 gallons per minute, as this may reduce cleaning productivity and contribute to uneven results.
- Ensure rinsing is thorough — inadequate rinsing leaves residues that may stain the cleaned surface.
Storage and Handling
- Store in a cool, dry place at 45–100°F (7–38°C).
- Always seal container after dispensing.
- Do not alter or mix with other chemicals.
- Do not double stack pallets.
- Dispose of in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does SafStrip require a neutralization step after use?
A: No. SafStrip requires no surface neutralization after stripping. Spent stripper rinses off easily with cold or hot water.
Q: Is SafStrip safe to use on all wood surfaces?
A: SafStrip is suitable for wood surfaces in general, but it is not intended for finely finished wood surfaces such as furniture. Always test a small area first.
Q: Can SafStrip be used on polished surfaces?
A: No. SafStrip is not recommended for use on polished surfaces. PROSOCO's SafStrip 8 is more appropriate for polished or other sensitive surfaces.
