The E8000 stands apart from standard magnetic drills through its combination of Unibor's largest cutter capacity, proprietary DrillSmart and LiftShield technologies, and a 4-speed gearbox — features that collectively extend cutter life, protect the operator, and provide the speed flexibility needed when stepping between small and large diameter holes on the same job. Its swivel base, internal cabling, and quick-release interchangeable handle further distinguish it as a purpose-built solution for high-production structural steel work rather than a general-purpose drill.
Key Features & Benefits
DrillSmart Technology
DrillSmart is Unibor's proprietary intelligent control system designed to maximize both machine life and cutter life by optimizing motor performance during the cut. For contractors running expensive annular cutters on high-volume jobs, this translates directly into reduced tooling costs and less unplanned downtime.
LiftShield Safety System
LiftShield provides an additional layer of operator protection by monitoring and managing the machine's behavior during drilling operations. On large-diameter cuts where torque loads are highest, this system helps prevent dangerous kickback events that can occur if a cutter binds or the magnet loses adhesion.
4-Speed Gearbox
The four-speed gearbox allows the operator to match spindle speed to cutter diameter and material hardness, ensuring optimal cutting conditions across the full 4" capacity range. Running large cutters at reduced speed preserves cutter geometry and reduces heat buildup, while higher speeds keep smaller cutters productive.
2000W Variable Speed Motor with 4,496 lb Magnet
The 2000W motor delivers the sustained power needed to drive 4" annular cutters through heavy structural steel without stalling, while the high-strength electromagnet — rated at 4,496 lbs holding force on a 1" or thicker plate — keeps the machine locked firmly to the workpiece under full cutting load. Together, these specifications make the E8000 capable of tackling the largest holes that portable mag drilling demands.
Multi-Function Capability: Drilling, Countersinking, Twist Drilling, and Tapping
Beyond annular cutting, the E8000 accepts a 5/8" chuck for twist drilling up to 1-1/4", countersinking up to 1-5/8", and tapping up to 1-3/16". This versatility eliminates the need to bring multiple machines to a job site, reducing setup time and equipment costs.
Swivel Base, Internal Cabling, and Quick-Release Interchangeable Handle
The swivel base enables the machine to be repositioned for angled drilling without full repositioning of the workpiece. Internal cabling keeps the work area cleaner and reduces snag hazards, while the quick-release interchangeable handle allows the operator to adapt the grip configuration to confined or awkward access locations.
LED Work Light
The integrated LED work light illuminates the cutting zone directly, improving hole placement accuracy in low-light environments such as structural bays, confined spaces, or night-shift site work.
Common Applications
Structural Steel Fabrication
The E8000's 4" cutter capacity and 4" depth of cut make it the correct tool for drilling large-diameter holes through heavy structural sections — beams, columns, and plates — in fabrication shops and on site.
Construction and Ironwork
On construction sites where large bolt holes, pipe penetrations, or connection plates must be drilled in structural steel, the E8000's high magnet adhesion and powerful motor allow it to work safely in position without a drill press or fixed setup.
Railway Infrastructure
As explicitly identified in the manual's intended use, the E8000 is suited for drilling ferrous metal components in railway applications, where heavy rail sections and track hardware require large, precise holes.
Petrochemical and Industrial Plant
In petrochemical environments where drilling into pipe flanges, structural supports, and equipment frames is required, the E8000's swivel base and pipe adapter compatibility allow it to be used on curved and flat ferrous surfaces.
Pipe and Curved Surface Drilling (with Pipe Adapter Kit)
Using the optional pipe adapter kit with adjustable angle plates, the E8000 can be mounted securely on the longitudinal axis of a pipe to cut holes in round ferrous sections — a capability not available on standard flat-base mag drills.
Tapping and Thread Cutting in Ferrous Metal
With tapping capacity up to 1-3/16", the E8000 can cut threads directly in structural steel components, eliminating a secondary operation and reducing total cycle time on connection and fastener work.

Application Instructions
Pre-Operation Setup
- Ensure the magnet switch is OFF before plugging the machine into the power supply.
- Inspect all electrical supply cables and extension leads for damage; replace any damaged cables before use.
- Verify the underside of the magnet base is clean, flat, and free of swarf or debris.
- Confirm the workpiece is bare ferrous metal, flat, and at least 1" thick for full magnetic holding performance. If the workpiece is thinner than 1", position substitute material under the magnet and workpiece to achieve adequate thickness, or use an alternative secure restraint method.
- Secure the machine to a fixed independent feature using safety strap (RDC4083) and stationary rings (RDC4082) affixed to the uppermost side hole of the magnet before every operation.
- Ensure the coolant bottle contains sufficient cutting oil for the required operation duration.
Cutter Mounting
- Disconnect the machine from the power source before changing cutters.
- With the machine in the upright position, ensure the Arbor Assembly (CA130) is fully inserted into the Arbor Spindle (RDD4022).
- Take the appropriate pilot pin and place it through the hole in the cutter shank.
- Insert the shank of the cutter (3/4" Weldon shank) into the bore of the Arbor Assembly, aligning the two drive flats with the socket screws.
- Tighten both screws securely using the hexagon key before operating.
Chuck Fitting (for Twist Drilling and Tapping)
- Disconnect from the power source.
- Insert Arbor Shank (RDD4128) into Arbor Spindle (RDD4022) and ensure a tight fit.
- Insert 5/8" Chuck (RDD4126) into RDD4128 and ensure a tight fit.
- To remove the chuck, reverse the sequence using the Drift (RDD4129).
Gear Selection
- Select the appropriate gear using the slide selector before starting the motor. Use lower gears for larger diameter cutters to reduce output speed and protect the cutter.
- Refer to the cutting speed selection chart in the manual for recommended speeds by cutter diameter and material.
Drilling Operation
- Position the machine on the workpiece, switch on the magnet, and confirm secure adhesion before starting the motor.
- Position the guard over the cutter before activating the machine.
- Start the motor using the motor start button on the control panel.
- Apply light pressure when commencing the cut until the cutter is introduced into the work surface, then increase pressure sufficiently to load the motor. Do not apply excessive pressure — it does not increase penetration speed and may trigger the overload protection or cause excessive heat.
- Occasionally depress the pilot to confirm cutting fluid is being correctly metered to the cutter.
- Keep the inside of the cutter clear of swarf, as swarf buildup restricts operating depth.
- Always ensure the slug from the previous hole has been ejected before commencing the next cut.
- To stop, depress the MOTOR stop button. Do NOT switch off the motor using the MAGNET switch.
Pipe Adapter Fitting
- Attach adjustable angle plates (RD3328) with cap screws (RD4325) and washers (RD4205, 4 off each) to the magnet sides — do not tighten yet.
- Locate the machine on the centerline of the pipe, ensuring the magnet is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the pipe.
- Switch on the magnet and move the sliding plates down to the outside diameter of the pipe.
- Tighten the screws on both sides by hand, then verify the full length of the moving plates is touching the pipe at the front and back. Fasten the plates securely.
- Feed the safety strap through the lugs at the front of the housing, around the pipe, and pull tight.
- When cutting, do not use excessive pressure — allow the cutter to ease into the cutting surface.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the maximum cutter diameter and depth the E8000 can handle?
A: The E8000 is rated for annular cutters up to 4" diameter and 4" depth of cut in 0.2/0.3C carbon steel, making it Unibor's largest capacity portable magnetic drill.
Q: Can the E8000 be used for operations other than annular hole cutting?
A: Yes. In addition to annular cutting, the E8000 supports twist drilling up to 1-1/4", countersinking up to 1-5/8", and tapping up to 1-3/16" using the supplied 5/8" chuck and appropriate tooling.
Q: What is the minimum workpiece thickness required for safe magnetic adhesion?
A: The magnet is rated at 4,496 lbs holding force on a workpiece of at least 1" thickness. Material thinner than 1" will progressively reduce magnetic performance. If the workpiece is too thin, substitute material should be positioned under the magnet and workpiece to achieve adequate thickness, or an alternative secure restraint method must be used.
Q: Can the E8000 be used on DC power or with arc welding in progress on the same structure?
A: No. The E8000 is designed for single-phase 50–60Hz AC supply only and must never be used on DC power. It must also not be used on the same structure when arc welding is in progress, as DC current will earth back through the magnet and cause irreparable damage.
Q: What extension cable can be used with the E8000?
A: The machine is factory fitted with a 9-3/4 ft, 14AWG, 3-conductor cable. If an extension is required on a 120V supply, do not exceed 11-1/2 ft of 3-core x 14AWG. Using an undersized or overly long extension cable will result in reduced magnet holding force and motor power.
Q: How often should the machine brushes be inspected?
A: Brushes should be checked at least once a week if the machine is used frequently. If a brush has worn more than two-thirds of its original length, it must be replaced immediately to prevent damage to the machine.
Q: Can the E8000 be used to drill holes in steel pipe?
A: Yes, with the optional pipe adapter kit. Adjustable angle plates attach to the magnet sides and allow the machine to be mounted securely on the longitudinal axis of a pipe for drilling curved ferrous surfaces.
